Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event nears, there’s always a clamor to include of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications successfully include many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored that year
  • Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers function at the hard edge of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
