British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of approach shafts providing entry to the facility... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their courage," he added. "They were part of a great many British troops stationed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, highlights how British military are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military carried out what it termed a "major assault" against Daesh sites in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
